What you will see at the
Janis Joplin
Exhibit
July 6th – 9th @ The
Hotel Monaco ~ San Francisco
Area Arts and the estate of Janis Joplin have compiled what we
feel is a snapshot of Janis’ life in the 1960s. In the
5 years that Janis was on the public stage she transformed music
forever. Her bold style and her flat out rock and roll lifestyle
has earned her a very special place in history. However, few
people are aware that she was a very good artist
As part of Janis Joplin weekend in San Francisco we are offering
a once in a lifetime experience to see Janis” art and artifacts.
This exhibit is currently touring galleries in the US and Europe.
Hotel Monaco San Francisco will be hosting this very special exhibit
at which we will be offering the Janis Joplin, estate signed limited
edition art prints for sale to the public. Included in these pieces
are examples of Janis’ painting and drawing styles. From
whimsical Oz figures to serious paintings reminiscent of Modigliani,
people are truly amazed at her level of talent. The limited editions
are hand signed by Michael Joplin and come with Estate documentation
of authenticity.
Janis’ personal artifacts on display are on loan from the
estate and include a pair stage worn pants by the famous designer
Nudie. This display is accompanied with three photos of Janis in
one of her Nudie outfits. These photos were taken by Francisco
Scuvullo and given to Janis.
The Feather Boas, the heart choker, the tassel belts, one of the
bangle bracelets and an ankle bracelet. All of the items listed
above were worn by Janis on the cover of Pearl. The Pearl album
went platinum after Janis’ death. The original platinum album
that was given to her parents will be in the exhibit. Also on loan
are very rare posters and photography from the early days of of
Janis’ career and a few of the very rare posters with Janis
as a solo performer.
To complete this look into the life of Janis Joplin we have added
several other rare collectibles that will be for sale at the exhibit.
These include artwork from the Cheap Thrills album cover done in
a beautiful limited edition serigraph by R. Crumb. There will also
be some very special paintings of Janis done by fellow rock Icon
Grace Slick especially for this exhibit.
Many of Janis old friends as well as a representative from the
estate will be on hand Thursday evening at the reception for this

The artwork of
Janis Joplin
Janis
Joplin was like a red hot burning ember. very bright and powerful
but short lived.
In the few years that she was with us
on a public stage we were constantly awed at
her talent. Now, over 35 years since her
untimely death, her music and persona still
top the charts.
The
legacy of Janis is stronger now than ever.
We now are once again blown away
when we see that she was also a very accomplished
visual artist. Although the body of work that she did in those
few years is limited, the works show us a very talented artist
that is able to achieve a strong communication in her paintings and drawings.
Janis’ first
love was art and fashion design. She once quipped to her brother,
very early in her singing career, that she only
did the singing gigs to help pay for art supplies.
The piece Shucking is a self portrait referring to an old phrase
used by blues musicians referring to shuffling along in a melancholy
mood. The piece Drafted is a friend of Janis’ that has
been drafted and is to report for the Army on February 3rd circa
1965.
There
is a series of prints that contain her writings as well as her sketches from
her college days at Lamar University
in Texas.
The larger canvas paintings are classic in nature and show
that she had a very good eye for composition and form.
The edition sizes on the editions are 750 SN + APs & RNs.
All works are accompanied with a certificate of authenticity from
the Joplin Estate
